Do what’s best for all, not what’s best for one

Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Dear Editor,

The Selma City Council and the citizens of Selma voted to have an elected school board versus an appointed one. However, it appears that Councilwoman Bennie Ruth Crenshaw has decided she is going to stick with appointing one for District 4, which includes the ward she represents – Ward 7.

I was appalled to see Councilwoman Crenshaw at the Queen of Peace polling site vigorously asking voters to vote against Debra Reeves-Howard and against the bond issue. There appears to be no end to what Crenshaw will do to try to influence who will be on the Selma Board of Education for District 4.

I am a resident of Ward 7 and Councilwoman Crenshaw needs to focus her attention on improving the living conditions in our ward instead of trying to put someone on the school board who will only look out for her personal interests. I applaud Debra Reeves-Howard for speaking out against corruption in the Selma City School System and appreciate her for cooperating with the United States Department of Education and the FBI when at-risk funds were being misappropriated. Our children’s education was at-risk!

Personally, I like the; however, I am fed up with Rose Sanders, Bennie Ruth Crenshaw, Synethia Pettaway and others like them who are trying to keep Selma from moving forward. It’s time for a change and the time has come.

I encourage the citizens of Selma, especially in District 4, to come out and vote your own conviction on Dec. 8, 2009. Do your own homework on the two candidates for District 4 and do not be led by people who are only interested in their own personal gain.

Eric L. Rose

I listened to Miss Howard this morning on viewpoint, she brought out things about the school board that I'm sure many people in our fair town didnt know. I thank her for that. Its a disgrace what some people will do for their own agenda.

Cahaba Fire Station had its problems. Mrs. Crenshaw had nothing to do with them. Let's say rudeness, partialty, etc. were evident.

I did too, dingaling. The early college program is being abused, and it needs to stop. There are plenty of underprivleged kids out here that need an education and are being denied it because of corruption and cronyism.I live in the ward Ms.Howard is running to represent,i'll give her serious consideration on December 8th.

By the way,Mr.Ufomadu had better accept Randy's invitation to get his platform out if he wants to keep his seat on the board.

I agree with Mr. Rose, the people voted so that the citizens may have an elected school board, when city council persons try to sway your vote at the polls it is the same as an appointed. Not only Bennie Ruth Crenshaw, but Sam Randolph and Angela Benjamin. They all have an issue with letting the people decide for themselves. Bennie Ruth and Sam Randolph are pushing their chioce in the race. Angela Benjamin dog in the race was whipped! Voters be weary of their selection of people, because they are only serving thier interest. Sam Randolph has been campaigning for his sister, Bennie Ruth has been at the majority black polls pushing Ufamadu and Sam sister, and Angela is going where the money is. Black Citizens be weary. I refuse to be like the rest but I advise you to vote for the best. not who theses destrucutive people influence you to vote for and if so happen to select the candidate they are pushing let it be because you believe in them, not because someone promised you to pay thier lightbill or rent.

Dr, Ufamado is a victim of circumstance. I hate that these no count organizations endorsed him in the first place. The only endorsement that was worth anything was the STJ endorsement. Its funny how they are overlooking that. The STJ endorsed another lady running and has has been called the white peoples candidate but those who endorsed Dr. Ufamado won't discuss he also was the so called white mans choice. I hate he even received the endorsement because that Perkins Machine will ruin his chance.

Lets keep it real. Debra Howard has a bad attitude. She is rude and borderline ignorant. District 4 should be weary of the foolishness that says to support her because Rose Sanders is attacking her. Vote because when you ask her anything she does not agree with she gets ignorant.

And also all that mess she covered on viewpoint is a mess. Okay I will commend her for standing up to corruption but after she stirs the pot of Sh*t she does not stay to see the vote through. how cowardly.

Then Fraces Coles endorses Debra, that says alot!

Her only intent of serving on the school board is to start more mess to get rid of Dr. Obashan. She was the one calling Albert Turner on 105 telling all the business of the school board. that is not professional conduct. She and her group of candidates are proposing to get rid of Dr, Obasahan if they are eleceted. Now that Albert Turners has been kicked off of 105 he is now singing a different tune.

Albert Turners is supporting anyone who is will to get rid of Dr. Obasahan, and if you would look at his politically motivated endorsements it is obvious. He once called WHBB the racist white station and now he is on kissing Randy Williams butt! People don't forget the past, for if you do your future will surely be compromised! GOD Bless you Dr. Ufamadu and get on viewpoint and argue your position cause Debra is bad news just likew her attitude!

I will endorse whomever I believe will work in the best interest of our community. It's too bad that you have such a hatred for me that you cannot exercise any objectivity,(I'm sure you don't know me just as I certainly am a person who may not know you.) Why would it matter to you that I would support Ms. Howard? I have no intentions of getting rid of Dr. Obasahan. I have been one of the persons in the community accepts all people. You people should get you some business! I have learned how to address POLITICAL ISSUES AND I DO A DARN GOOD JOB AT IT. I don't care about the under the clothes agenda you and many of the ill informed callers talk about. I have spoken the truths for 20 years now. Never have I been discredited! To my national following eat your heart out. This is the way we have to GET DOWN with our townsfolk! I don't throw a rock and hide my hands!

This is to Frances Coles:
I never said YOU were trying to get rid of Dr. Obashan, I commend you for the fact that you went against the grain at 105 to endorse Ms. Howard, keep that up you might lose a forum to speak everyday. They (105) hate Ms. Howard so much even the FF can't save your from that wrath.

Well frances I tell you what is the truth you have been a LOUD voice in Selma, but everytime you run for something you LOSE! That is enough discredit within itself. No one cares about what you talk about. You change with the weather. Its almost pyshchotic.

But to say the truth you do keep me laughing!

But I see why you would endorse her, you both have the same type of attitude, BAD!

to leo71: Could you present some statistics to support your statement that "there are plenty of underprivleged kids out here that need an education and are being denied it because of corruption and cronyism"?

If you are referring to Ms Howard's false accusation that he used his position on the board to get his child in Early College, how is that so when his child went through the same application and interview process that every other prospect went through. To add, his child was accepted WAY before he was on the Board.

Furthermore, people should not hold it against Dr. Ufomadu because he has alot of people who are rooting for him. He cannot help the fact that he is liked by many. Personally, many have viewed him as a peaceful man of God and it seems to me the only ones who have problems are the ones who MUST ultimately have a personal agenda. Had these organizations and politicians been pushing for Reeves or Coles they wouldn't have rejected it.

Can people stop thinking about themselves and think about the children? This is the only reason why Reeves-Howard would get Eric to write the letter, and leo71 to make those comments. By the way leo71, who is Randy? How do you know about personal invitations that no one else knows about? And does this person determine who wins since you say that "Ufomadu had better accept Randy's invitation to get his platform out if he wants to keep his seat on the board"???

I am objective, but this attack method is not an impressive way to get my vote. We do not need this type of behavior on the school board. Selma, be wise. We do not want to continue to deal with controversy and outside issues when we need to focused solely on the welfare of these kids. I have been trying to stay informed, and I have noticed that Ufomadu has only used noncontroversial methods during his campaign. Reeves should pick another position to run for because it seems as though she wants to be moreso an outspoken and controversial activist. That would be good somewhere else, but not on the School Board.

I know one thing if we put Ms.Howard in office our children will not have a good role model to follow. I was in my front yard talking to a person running for School Board President and Ms. Howard comes by in the middle of my conversation and ask why am I talking to that blank and I asked her how could she say something like that to a person that was not even talking to her. I would hate to see a person like that on any board let alone the school board where our children should be learning how to become good citizens one day.

Statistics aren't needed,"InformedSelmian.I think it's pretty safe to say that there are poor children in Selma that may have the grades to get admitted into the Early College program. My comment wasn't directed at Dr.Ufomadu, but if the shoe fits.I know for a fact that there are kids from well to do families that are in--or was in-- this program. If it was intended for disadvantaged kids whose parents did not attend college, that should be the focus of it.I'm not a part of any faction and simply want to vote for the best candidate for the job, that's objectivity...perhaps that' s something you should learn because your comments don't sound very objective.By the way the Randy I mentioned in my post is Randy Williams of WHBB's radio program Viewpoint. He did extend an ivitation to Dr.Ufomadu to get his platform out,it would probably be wise for him to accept it if he wants to get more votes the next time around.

FYI,I"InformedSelmian".I live in district four and voted for Dr.Ufomadu on the advice of the Times-Journal.If thats not objective I don't know what is.

Posted by InformedSelmian (anonymous) on November 7, 2009 at 11:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If I didn't sound objective, my apologies. I just wanted to present facts from another side because I believe that Debra is getting attention because of her accusations. I had to call and speak to the people in charge of Early College myself and learned that the reason why well to do families were getting in now is because when the invitation was extended to only the underpriveledged, alot of them didn't take it so there were spots to fill (remember this is a funded program). To add, a student being a "first generation" now only counts for a small portion of the qualifier for getting accepted in the program. Had to ask the director to be sure whether or not what Howard said about Ufomadu using his influence was true. When I found out it was not, I felt betrayed. That was all. Not taking sides, but i felt more at peace after finding out he wasn't using these type of tactics to win our votes. Once again, I'm remaining objective, but leaning towards him because my research is beginning to show him to be more concentrated on getting his information out, rather than falsely degrading his opponent.

Posted by InformedSelmian (anonymous) on November 7, 2009 at 11:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Also, I'm not sure about the radio program situation, but if that is a determining factor in whether more people will vote for him, that is sad. I hope people wouldn't vote for Howard or Ufomadu solely on what station they have or hav en't been on.

Oh and I agree with you leo71. The Times-Journal endorsement definitely helped in making a decision! It spoke alot of volume and gave more insight...

Posted by leo71 (anonymous) on November 7, 2009 at 12:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Not a determining factor,Informed, but another tool--just like the paper's endorsement-- for voters to vet a candidate.I didn't get a chance to attend any of the forums-- and others probably did not either--so getting on the radio and stating your platform and answering questions would help us to learn more about him...it's the nature of politics.I also urge parents--particularly poor ones-- get information about the early college program,I don't blame the educated and middle class of Selma for aggressively taking advantage of this program those that are poor and care something about their children ought to do the same...but apathy and ignorance--not corruption and cronyism-- may be the problems here.
