Dallas County wins big in tournament

Published Thursday, November 5, 2009

PLANTERSVILLE — The fourth annual Dallas County Tip-Off Classic had two games decided by a total of nine points Wednesday night in opening action.

Then there was host Dallas County, which grabbed a 52-point decision in its first game of the season.

The Lady Hornets rolled over Wilcox Central 94-42 in the second game Wednesday.

In the opener, Greene County edged Keith 48-44 despite a Lady Bears fourth-quarter surge of 22 points. And Selma held off a strong Sumter County squad 50-45 in the finale.

“We’ve got seven seniors, so I think we’ll be competitive,” Dallas County coach Charles Thompson said. “We hope we can get better.”

Selma coach Anthony Harris was upset with his team’s ball control.

“We were 8-for-23 from the free-throw line and had 43 turnovers,” he said. “But I guess we’ll take a win for our first game.”

Keith’s Cecil Williams said he hopes his squad has gotten over the first-game jitters.

“Our ball control needs work,” he said.
