Selma police to monitor red lights
Published Saturday, October 31, 2009
Selma — The Selma Police Department will begin a two-weeklong red light monitoring detail Monday.
“We will be holding the monitoring in four-hour increments during the day and night,” said Sgt. Doug Stewart.
Police will be looking for people who run the stoplights, turn left on stoplights and fail to yield to the driver with the right way.
At the culmination of this traffic detail officers will look at the data.
“We’re going to see exactly how big of a problem this is in Selma,” Stewart said.

You can add stop signs to this as well. Also the SPD might want to pass out a driver's manual to enlighten them on proper etiquette and basic right of way.
However there is one glaring red light problem I can attest to. The rather busy intersection of Bell and Medical Center Parkway needs a NEW set of lights. So many accidents there and that light is P-I-T-I-F-U-L... There was a wreck the other morning, the CCA traffic patrol was signalling traffic (she didn't know how to handle it). Then the firetruck arrives and blocks the ONLY remaining lane of traffic. Diverts traffic completely around the intersection when there was clearly no reason to. Then the firemen walk across the damn intersection to the accident. Brilliant work.
"BARBARIC!"

wish they'd monitor the stop-signs in Old Town! Not to mention the people yakking on their cellphones. Somebody turning left into King Street the other day very nearly collided with me head-on because she was so busy with her cell phone and using one hand to turn the steering wheel. she didn't so much "turn" as "bear left" which meant that she came across the right lane of King (off Dallas) to get into the driving lane on King. I don't think she even noticed!!!!
I suspect that a large percentage of drivers around Alabama are driving with no license. It seems apparent that they have no idea beyond "red means 'stop'" (if they feel like it) about the rules of the road!

Sounds like someone at city hall wants to install cameras at the intersections for auto ticketing. This is a very bad idea for citizens, and rapidly becomes corrupt because the people who provide the auto-ticket system/surveillance receives a percentage of the tickets generated. Aside from that, Selma police officers are not data collectors, they are law enforcement.
These officers time would be better spent patrolling our neighborhoods. 3 houses robbed in my neighborhood in the last 3 weeks. :(

Before they monitor them they need to fix them.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't they be doing this already?
b4real - hope you'll come join us to protest cameras if they decide to do that. You should go check the other stories on cameras, evidently there are already audio/video surveillance in use SOMEWHERE. I would sure like to know where...

For all of you. How many officers do you think are out each shift to write citations, handle the 40+ calls each shift requiring incident reports, work accidents, open car doors, respond to burglar alarms, push stalled vehicles from roads, serve warrants, perform escorts for businesses, check on the family member you have not heard from in a day, jump start your car because the lights were left on...should I keep going?

they have cameras n the gwc homes still they seem 2 have crimes still committed with no arrest so why red lights is a big deal for them now

with a 2nd suspect still at large with a school zone shooting! it was really more than 2 involved but yet red lights is a big issue when a kid could have been killed for no reason just leaving school trying 2 make it home

No one seems to want to answer my above question....

@subzero
I don't know how many there are. Did you want a guess? I would say 10 on day shift and probably eight at night.
I would also like to see better public use of the 911 system. 911 is supposed to be for emergencies only. 311 is for non-emergencies. If your car has been broken into and the perp is gone...that's a 311. If someone is breaking into your car, that's a 911. Police response can be improved and more effective if we use the system properly.
@liberty Let me know when and where, and I'll be there with facts on. :)

There are actually 4 officers per shift if no one calls in sick and two supervisors. Your guess though is what most citizens think. These four officers can only be reactive..there is no way for this department at this time to be pro-active. The study a couple of years ago stated that at least 9 patrol officers should be on each shift along with the two supervisors.

Subzero, you seem to be very informed. How many crossing guards, meter maids and other deadwood do we have in the main office building at the police station? I have no idea, so I'm asking. Maybe the SPD should cut some deadwood and get more people on the street. The running of lights, signs, and all out breaking of traffic rules is getting out of hand.
And if you can not multi-task, talk and drive, PULL OVER and talk!!!! Or drive, but not both!!!!
