Garbage, all right

It’s the same scenario each time, police say. He lures his victims into giving him a ride and then robs them. Now, after what police say is the fifth such episode, the suspect may have finally went to the well once too often.

Rodney Dixon, 35, of Selma was arrested May 12 by Selma Police and charged with robbery third degree. The district attorney’s office claims Dixon has used the same method in at least four other robberies he’s committed in Selma.

On each occasion, according to officials, Dixon approaches his victims, causing them to stop their vehicles to give him assistance, threatens and then robs them. On the last two robberies, Dixon has allegedly caught his victim’s attention by telling them he is their “garbage man.”

Dixon was out on bond, awaiting trial on four previous robbery first- and third-degree charges, when he committed the May 12 robbery.

On Wednesday, Dallas County District Judge Nathaniel Walker set Dixon’s bond at $10,000, despite District Attorney Ed Greene’s motion to revoke Dixon’s bond.

According to police reports, Dixon approached a Selma man in the Winn Dixie parking lot on Highland Avenue and asked for a ride to Alabama Avenue. The victim initially refused Dixon’s request, but later gave him a ride after Dixon told him, “I pick up your garbage.”

As the victim was driving south on Marie Foster, Dixon allegedly grabbed the man by the shoulder, pushed him and ran his hand into his pockets.

The victim told police that he had only $6 in his pocket and that he told Dixon he could have it. He said Dixon then told him he didn’t want the $6 and demanded his wallet.

Once on Alabama Avenue, the victim was able to alert the police and advise them of the robbery.

Dixon’s attorney, Michael Jackson, said he has filed for a mental evaluation for his client.

“I believe facts will come out later that will exonerate Rodney. He’s not a bad guy. He just has some mental problems,” Jackson said.
