Rain stymies ‘Leafs

Mother Nature did not cooperate with the Selma Cloverleafs’ morning practice schedule Wednesday, as a hard rain forced Selma’s newly-formed, independent professional baseball team into the weight room.

The Cloverleafs begin their inaugural season on Friday against the Americus, Ga., Arrows. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m., with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.

While this weekend’s probable starting pitchers were named on Tuesday, first-year Cloverleafs manager Merritt Bowden is still adjusting his lineup for Friday’s game.

Though it’s subject to change, Bowden is fairly sure his lineup will consist of the following: Leading off will be left field speedster Bartkawski Cowan, who has been timed at 6.23 seconds in the 60-yard dash. Next is likely to be third baseman Keith Sills, followed by right fielder and Pennsylvania native Jose Colon.

The heart of the lineup is where the uncertainty lies, Bowden said. Either first baseman Davey Thomas or Bowden (designated hitter) will hit in the No. 4 or No. 5 holes.

Rounding out the order is likely to be catcher Kevin Bice, second baseman Desmond O’Quine, shortstop Andrew Tarver, Jr. and center fielder Joe Colin III in the No. 9 hole.

Though his lineup is subject to change depending on which pitcher the Cloverleafs face on Friday, it should hold up, Bowden said.

Miami native Dennis Gomez is slated to start on Friday, but will be on a strict pitch count due to his recovery from a rotator cuff injury he sustained more than a year ago. Selma’s own Terry Waters is expected to get the nod on Sunday, which will be the Cloverleafs’ last home game until June 25, when they return from an 18-game road swing.
