Quister James Summers Sr.
Quister James Summers Sr., died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at a hospital at Travis Air Force Base in California.
Services were held on Friday, May 23, at the Chapel of Travis Air Force Base with the Rev. Arthur Homer officiating. Burial followed in Fairfield-Suisan Cemetery in Fairfield, Calif.
Survivors include a devoted wife, Luella Summers; a son Quister James Summers Jr.; two daughters, Deborah Summers-Collins and Acquenetta Summers-Wong; two sons-in-law, Eddie B. Collins Jr. and Henry Kit Shon Wong; and one grandchild, Chelsea Elizabeth Collins (all of California); four brothers, Cleophus H. (Dorothy) Summers, Levi D. (Leola) Summers all of Mobile, Alex (Lester Ann) Summers and William 0. (Natlene) Summers all of Selma; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Active pallbearers were, Chapel Center, Cleophus H. Summers, Quister J. Summers Jr., Levi D. Summers, Eddie B. Collins Jr., Alex Summers and Henry K.S. Wong.
Honorary pallbearers were the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
Mr. Summers, was born the first of six sons on Oct. 2, 1934, in Dallas County, to Wesley and Lola Summers, Jr. At an early age he united with the Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Selma, and was baptized there in 1946.
His high school years were spent at Dallas County Training School (Beloit, where he graduated class valedictorian in 1953. Upon graduation he attended Tuskegee Institute (Tuskegee) after receiving a scholarship. Later, he moved to Mobile, and united with Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. There he became the Sunday School Superintendent and served faithfully until he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957.
His military career spanned 30 years. His foreign tours of duty included Greenland, Thailand, Vietnam, and Okinawa. He retired with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant and with a variety of medals, awards, and honors. His love of aircraft led him to pursue a second career with United Air Lines. He completed approximately 14 years of service with this airline.
