Pre-majors advance in state tourney

It all came down to the play at the plate. On Monday night, Selma’s Pre-Majors (15-16 year-old All-Stars) were barely holding a 3-2 lead against Thomasville in the seventh inning, and the tying run was rounding third on a base hit to the outfield. Selma catcher Clint Cooper stepped in, plucking the ball out of the air and tagging the runner at the last minute, giving Selma the 3-2 victory and the title of district champions.

The championship was held at Bloch Park this year, and the Pre-Majors went undefeated during the tournament. Selma player Spence Roe led offensively for his team, going 3-for-3 for the night with three singles. Teammate Jeremy Smith was 2-for-3 for the evening with one double and one single. His double allowed him to be in scoring position and to score one of Selma’s three runs. Donald Steele went 1-for-3 for the game with a double.

Thomasville players Gray Davis and Jeremy Gates scored for their team.
