Pelicans too tough for Selma

The Selma Cloverleafs dropped the second of a three game series with the Pensacola Pelicans last night at Bloch Park 7-4.

Despite the loss, the crowd in Selma continues to swell. In Friday’s series opener, which the Leafs dropped 12-10, 248 people attended the game. Saturday, 138 watched the Leafs and Pensacola play.

In the top of the first, the Pelicans scored one run on two singles and a walk to take the lead in the ball game. They never looked back.

In the top of the second the Pelicans managed to pick up three more runs on four singles, extending their lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Cloverleafs threatened to rally when Andrew Tarver reached base on a Pelican error. Keith Sills then drew a walk. On a double steal, Tarver and Sills moved over to second and third and a passed ball scored Tarver from third to make the score 4-1.

In the top of the fifth, Pensacola’s Brian Rooke drew a lead off walk and then Jermaine Harrison hit a double down the first base line to score Rooke and make the score 5-1.

In the top of the sixth Casey Clarke drew a lead off walk, and then advanced to third on two straight passed balls. Clarke scored from third on the third pass ball of the inning, making the score 6-1.

In the bottom of the sixth Jose Colon tried to get the Cloverleafs started again when he hit a solo homerun, making the score 6-2.

In the bottom of the eighth Luke Hurst started things off with a lead off single, then he stole second to put himself in scoring position. On yet another passed ball, Hurst moved to third and eventually scored on a Colon single, making the score 6-3.

In the top of the ninth a walk and a single back to the pitcher scored one more for the Pelicans, giving them a 7-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth the Cloverleafs tried to rally when Brock Lowell and Merrit Bowden both singled to put runners at first and second. Then a deep fly ball by Joe Colvin advanced Lowell to third. Lowell later scored on a ground out by Luke Collins to make the final score 7-4.
