Timothy Brian Sanderson, 21, of Marion, was shot to death Friday night after a verbal argument with another man.

According to Cpl. Billy Jones of the Perry County Sheriff’s Department, Sanderson was shot six times by a .22 caliber rifle. Tony Hill, 23, of Marion, has been arrested and charged for the crime and police have concluded their investigation of the homicide.

Sanderson, the son of recently elected Perry County Commissioner Tim Sanderson, was pronounced dead on the scene.

“Around 6:03 Friday night, we received a call about a shooting on County Road 30,” Jones said. “Paramedics were already there and the State Troopers were there before I arrived at the scene at 6:30.”

Upon arrival, Jones said Hill was being escorted outside by his father. Deputies arrested him after interviewing witnesses.

According to Jones, witnesses at the scene said Sanderson and Hill had a verbal argument that likely led to the shooting.

“They said Sanderson was cursing at Tony Hill about pushing around a girl,” Jones said. Apparently, the argument heightened into the shooting death of Sanderson.

The victim’s father, also the city superintendent in Marion, won a narrow victory in the Perry County Commission District 2 race. He defeated Marion businessman Charles LeCroy by two votes. LeCroy decided not to challenge the election.

Timothy Sanderson is survived by a mother, Donna Posey, of Selma; and sisters Jennifer Posey of Atlanta, Melissa Sanderson of West Blocton, and Stephanie Hale of Marion.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Kirk Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens in Marion.

The family is scheduled to receive friends tonight, from 6-8, at Kirk Funeral Home.
