Soccer season spiffed up this year with new uniforms; camp next week

The City of Selma and the YMCA kicked off their fall soccer season last night at the softball complex with a mini camp. The camp will be held for two more days, and the next two available dates are Aug. 26-27 at the softball complex.
This is the third year that the City Recreation Department and the YMCA have worked together on the soccer league. The first year they had 75 kids come out and participate, and last year they had 150 kids participate. The soccer league expects at least 200 this year, and hopes the mini camp will help that happen.
Some of the things that the different age groups work on during the camp are the basic drills that it takes to play soccer, learning how to kick the ball the proper way, and being able to stay with the ball while you’re kicking it.
The City Recreation Department, YMCA, and the volunteer coaches are what makes soccer in Selma work, according to Mills. The City of Selma provides the place to play and the uniforms for the kids. The YMCA provides the staff for the league, and all of the coaches volunteer their time during the season.
One of the improvements for this year’s season is that for the first time, the kids will have real uniforms instead of just t-shirts.
A few volunteer coaches are still needed, and there is still time to sign your kids up. Just attend one of the next two nights at the mini camp at the Softball Complex or call Mills(334) 874-7476 at the YMCA, or Elton Reece at (334)874-2140.
