Selma High got a little revenge Friday night at Memorial Stadium when they defeated Southside 14-12.

Penalties and turnovers kept the game from being a blow out one way or the other. Selma High even found themselves in a first-and-goal from the 50 yard line in the third quarter due to several penalties in succession.

Selma High head football coach Jerome Haroer felt much the same way.

Both quarterbacks had flashes of brilliance at times during the game.

Jai Miller pulled triple duty playing at quarterback, defensive back and punter, and he looked good even though he set out most of the early workouts with an injury.

Quinton Caston spent some time at quarterback, and defensive back for Southside. &uot;Caston had some nice throws considering it was the first time he had really played the quarterback position. He also did a very good job at defensive back for us,&uot; said Raymond.

Cedrick Effinger was the real work horse for Selma High on Friday night. &uot;Effinger had well over 50 yards on 14 carries, and he was one of the driving forces on the offense,&uot; said Harper.

Southside got out to an early lead when they stuffed one into the end zone after a Selma High fumble on the Saints opening drive of the game. Selma High blocked the extra point giving Southside an early 6-0 lead.

Southside found themselves on the other end of the fumble problems also in the first quarter. On third and two Tony Myles fumbled, and Selma High picked up the lose ball, and raced it into the end zone for the touchdown tying the ball game at 6-6. Selma converted the two point conversion to make the score 8-6 Selma High.

Selma High picked up their second score of the game when Miller hooked up with Jarvis Wormley for a 16 yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-6.

With less than two minutes to go in the ball game Southside drove the length of the field to score a touchdown, and put them within two points of a tie. Southside tried to tie the ball game by going for the two point conversion, but the throw into the end zone came up inches short to make the final score 14-12.

Selma High has the week off to get ready for their September 13 game at Prattville. &uot;I think if we can work hard for the next two weeks, and cut down on the mental mistakes we will be okay against Prattville,&uot; said Harper.

Southside takes on St. James on the road Friday September 6 at 7:30 p.m. &uot;I expect a lot of what we had tonight against Selma High in next week game against St. James. It should be a very hard nosed tough football games,&uot; said Raymond.
