It will be continued Nov. 6.

That’s the latest word from the state ethics commission on a complaint filed with the commission by a local resident against members of the Selma Water and Sewer Board.

On Wednesday, local resident Lee Goodwin said that he, along with water board members and their attorneys, came before the state ethics commission to make a decision regarding improper salaries received by water board members.

Goodwin said he had filed a complaint against water board members Glenn Sexton, B. L. Tucker, water board chairman Billy Hicks and Marvin Melton, who is secretary treasurer of the board.

Goodwin said a separate complaint had been filed against water board member Sam Randolph. He said according to an Attorney General’s opinion issued in 1988, water board members could only receive salaries of $100 per month, while those on the board of directors could only receive $125 per month.

According to a resolution brought before the Selma City Council by Councilwoman Rita Franklin during a previous council meeting, Hicks currently receives $2,125 per month, while Melton receives $1,625 per month. Randolph, Tucker and Sexton currently receive $800 per month, according to the resolution.

Randolph, Tucker and Sexton have said that they are now being paid $350 per month. Goodwin said he filed the complaint against certain water board members because, he said, they had illegally raised their own salaries.

After Wednesday’s hearing, General Counselor Hugh Evans, who is with the state ethics commission, said that the matter needed to be looked into further, and that the hearing would be continued on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
