James Polnitz Sr.

James Polnitz Sr., 87, of Orrville, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2002.

Survivors include his wife Ola Polnitz; five sons, Walter Polnitz Sr.; James Polnitz Jr., Windell Polnitz, Theo Polnitz and Edmond Polnitz; seven daughters, Ruby Eggliston, Mary Ann Overson, Betty Polnitz Wade, Emma Polnitz Welch, Carrie Polnitz Baker, Mildred Polnitz Baker and Clara Fullenwider; one brother, Oscar Polnitz; one sister, Naomi (Curtis) Craig; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five sons-in-law; three daudhters-in-law; one brother-in-law, Winfred Nelson of Bessemer.

Hugh Underwood

Hugh Underwood, of Lowndes County, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with the Rev. James McBride officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a son, Hugh Wayne Wallace; daughters, Tymeshia, Jasmine, Tikeysha, Kimberly Shields; five sisters, Mary (Nelson) Lindsey of Collirene, Earnestine (Johnny) Coleman of White Hall, Christine (Eddie) Steel of Trickum, Georgia Underwood and Cynthia Underwood both of Selma; one brother, James Underwood Jr. of Collirene, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and a devoted friend, Shirley Wallace.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Arthur Underwood.

Edward A. Sheridan

Edward A. Sheridan, 66, of Uniontown, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at a Birmingham hospital.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at New Live Oak Cemetery with Steve Sheridan officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Shirlyn Sheridan of Uniontown; mother, Maggie S. Sheridan of Prattville; sons, Mike Sheridan and Mark Sheridan both of Prattville; daughters, Renee (Bill) Tate of Selma, Pat Pugh of Prattville and Cathy Sheridan of Phenix City; brothers, Charles Sheridan and Tom Sheridan both of Prattville, and George Sheridan of Destin, Fla.; sisters, Jeannie Dismukes and Sarah Campbell both of Prattville; and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Sheridan was preceded in death by his father, George Sheridan.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Johnny J. Suttles

Johnny J. Suttles, 74, of Selma, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at a local hospital.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at New Cedar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. F.D. Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Sandridge Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife Lula Suttles.

The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, from 12-2 p.m.

Robert Mason

Robert Mason, of Lowndes County, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Ft. Deposit Complex with Bro. Bennie Stanford officiating. Burial will follow in Ft. Deposit Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Clarissa McCall Mason of Calhoun; three children, a daughter, Peaches McCall; two sons, Robert S. Mason ad Jadarius McCall of Calhoun; his parents, Robert Earl and Doris Mason; four sisters, Janice, Sabrina, Alicia and Latisha Thigpen all of Ft. Deposit; two brothers, Steven and James Thigpen of Ft. Deposit; grandmother, Mary Bell Mason, Clinton Seawright and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Ethel Rose Thigpen.

Ruth Ryland

Ruth Ryland, 94, of Selma, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at her home.

Graveside services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at New Live Oak Cemetery with the Rev. Stewart Wilson officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include step-son, William

Joseph (Katie) Ryland; daughter, Helen (Bill) Neighbors; step-daughter, Dale R. Henderson; sister, Pauline (Everette) Davis; three grandchildren; step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph Henry Ryland.

Active pallbearers are Drew Johnson, Scott Donald, Will Neighbors, Jeff Jones, John Morris and William Fuller.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church or your favorite charity.

She was a member of DAR and Magna Charta Dames.

Darren Darrell Surles

Darren Darrell Surles of Lowndes County, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2002.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Mt. Elan Baptist Church with Steven Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his parents, Albert and Dorothy Surles; five brothers, Melvin Rudolph, Eric Tracy and Joniah Lee Surles, Terry Harris and Marvin Holcomb; four sisters, Aurelia Rudolph, Elexie (Mark Anthony) Moorer, Kiwanna Latrell (Charles) Nelson, Amanda Shanetta (Macharia) Lamar; grandmother, Mary E. Surles; maternal grandmothers, Hattie and Lillie Rudolph.

Willie L. Campbell

Willie L. Campbell, 65, of Selma, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at a local hospital.

Joseph Richardson

Joseph &uot;Sonny Boy&uot; Richardson of New York, formerly of Selma, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002.

Graveside services were at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at Rest Haven Gardens Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla., with the Rev. C.E. Smith officiating and Reeds Funeral Home of Pensacola Fla., directing.

Survivors include his children, Joseph Richardson Jr., Charles Richardson, Gregory Richardson, Charlotte Richardson and Jacqueline Richardson; seven grandchildren and one great-grand child all of Pensacola, Fla.; eight sisters and two brothers: Bernice (Richard) Eldridge, Alma Harrell, Lois Parnell, and James (Shirley) Richardson, all of Selma, Esther (Bishop Fred) Sanders of Columbus, Ohio, Lucille Jones, Hannah Richardson, Sarah Lee Barnes, Sarah Pearl Bradley and Ned Richardson all of New York City; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother Joe Richardson of Detroit, Mich.

Pallbearers and Flower bearers were sons, daughters and friends.

Mr. Richardson, was born on March 25,1942 in Selma, to the late Sadie Bell Moultrie-Richardson and Rowdy Richardson also of Selma, who preceded him in death.

He attended school and church here in Selma, until he moved to New York City where he was employed on the shipyard and the docks for many years.

He was united in marriage to W. Jean Stodghill. To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters. Everyone his life touched loved him. His gentle smile and kindness for other people will always be remembered. He will be greatly missed by all his loved ones.

Raymond Edward Gingras

Raymond Edward Gingras, 76, of Orange Beach formerly of Gardner, Mass died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at a local healthcare facility.

Memorial service was at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Foley, with the Rev. Keith Talbert officiating and Baldwin Funeral Home of Gulf Shores directing.

A private committal will be held at a later date.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Woodman Gingras of Orange Beach; one son, Philip (Woody) Gingras of Orange Beach; four daughters, Barbara Gingras, Memphis, Tenn., Mimi Young of Orange Beach, Patti Moore of Storm Lake, Mass., and Evelyn G Phillips of Linden; two brothers, Frances C. Gingras and Roger K. Gingras of Gardner, Mass; four grandchildren, Seth Young of Atlanta, Ga., Ryan Young of Orange Beach, Jamie Kessler of Gardner, Kan., and Bridget Walker; and six great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Mr. Gingras graduated from Gardner High School in 1944 and Tufts University in 1947 with a degree in Engineering. He served in the US Navy and the US Marines and retired as Major from US Marine Reserve.

He was plant engineer at Allis Chalmer, Gadsden, plant superintendent at Dixie Tool and Die also in Gadsden, and retired from Al Lock in Selma, in 1995.

He enjoyed reading, yard work, furniture refinishing and woodworking.
