The votes are in: Valley Grande has a town council.
Candidates Tom Lee, Gil Allen, Edwin Pearson, Patsy Moore and Julie Drinkard along with mayor-elect Herb Story will be sworn into office today by Probate Judge Johnny Jones.
During the day yesterday, candidates stood outside the community center handing out cards and fliers. Behind the center, a table was covered with bowls filled with food. Pink lemonade could be found in a tent near the parking lot.
Story said he came to the election to meet everyone and make sure residents knew the plans of Alabama’s newest town, which include
improving the town’s volunteer fire department.
When asked about a city hall, Story pointed to the old volunteer fire department building next door to the community center. He guessed it could be converted into city hall in about two months, adding that a number of
people had already volunteered their time and money.
Probate Judge Johnny Jones said it was encouraging to see such an enthusiastic group of candidates who were excited about the town.
Vickie Chappelle of Valley Grande agreed.
Chappelle said the election marked an important day in the community’s life, and she voted to show support for her community.
Milton Ezelle, a member of the Valley Grande Committee, said he was pleased the community had finally reached the point where people could vote for their officials and voice their opinion. Probate Judge Johnny Jones will swear the winners into office today at 1 p.m. in the Valley Grande community.
