Selma Police arrested a 19-year-old suspect Wednesday in connection to the Jan. 13 shooting and robbery of Selma resident John Young.
David Keonne Hunter was taken into custody at approximately 2 p.m. and charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree assault.
According to Selma Police Chief Robert Green, evidence suggests the suspect shot Young several times and stole some of his belongings after asking the victim for a ride.
Loretta Young, the victim’s sister, said her brother was using a telephone outside a local establishment when he was approached by another man.
The two men drove south on Broad Street, then east on First Avenue, and finally back to Franklin Street.
Young said her brother was shot four times after attempting to exit the vehicle, and he was later transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center.
Young was then sent to the intensive care unit of a Birmingham hospital.
At the time of the arrest, Green said, Hunter was already out on bond and awaiting trial on two charges of first-degree assault for the shooting of two men on Church Hill Avenue and High Street in July of 2003.
Green described Hunter as being a real threat to the community.
The suspect is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail without bond pending a hearing.
