A group of Selma artists gathered Friday and Saturday night to display their wares at the second annual Arts Revive Harmony Club Show.
Arts Revive is devoted to celebrating and recognizing local talent, with an eye to eventually promote Selma’s unique artistic atmosphere.
Vicky Stoudenmire, spokesperson for Arts Revive, said the organization is hoping to exhibit Selma to the art community worldwide.
“We’re sitting on a goldmine,” said Stoudenmire. “The idea is to show people hat we have to offer. We want to make people take notice.”
Susan Spier Dumas, an artist with Selma roots currently living in Atlanta, agreed. “There’s no place like Selma.”
Dumas had been painting for a relatively short period of time. Formerly employed in advertising, Dumas &045; a Morgan Academy graduate &045; said her art career just happened one day.
“I just started experimenting,” she said.
Dumas joined the ranks of other local artists on display like Charlie “Tinman” Lucas and Francis Lanier.
Prizes were awarded Friday night.
Stoudenmire tied with Lanier for the People’s Choice award. Lucas won best three dimensional sculpture and Best of Show. Lanier won Best Transparent Painting and Stoudenmire won in the Best Opaque Painting Category.
Stoudenmire said, “The history in Selma is all we have. Everybody needs to stop fighting and get over it and move forward,” said Stoudenmire. “Art is a great way to do that.”
