Kesha Gibbons birthday party at the Tornado Club didn’t turn out as planned. After spending a little time with her friends at the club on Alabama Avenue, she noticed something was wrong at about 1:45 a.m.
That night, while celebrating her 29th birthday, Gibbons became a witness to a shooting that put Patrick Walker, a local Selma man, in the hospital.
Walker was shot outside the club, and ran inside, according to police reports. He was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center where he’s being treated for a gunshot wound to the back. He’s currently listed in stable condition.
Gibbons, who didn’t know Walker, left the club as soon as she could. When she got into her car she found a bullet hole in the driver’s side door of her car, a white 2002 Camry.
Police Chief Robert Green said the department has a suspect in mind.
Evidence of the shooting was found outside the club, but police weren’t able to determine what caliber of handgun was used.
It was one of two shootings that occurred Sunday morning.
In an unrelated incident, Kieth Crittendon was shot in the hand at Donnie Roy’s on Maxey Street. Police were alerted to the incident when Crittendon was admitted to the emergency room early Sunday morning. No arrests have been made.
Donnie Roy’s recently re-opened after being shut down last week by Operation PSET (Public Safety Enforcement Team). PSET is a joint operation conducted by the Selma Police Department and the Selma Fire Department. Donnie Roy’s was closed for being over capacity.
According to Green, PSET currently investigates clubs randomly. Plans for increasing the PSET investigation depend on the police department’s overtime budget.
The shooting at Donnie Roy’s is also under investigation.
Both shootings are the latest in a recent round of violence involving Selma area nightclubs. This is the sixth shooting in Selma since the year began.
Councilwoman Rita Sims Franklin thinks something should be done. As to what she doesn’t know.
As far as Selma’s nightlife, the violence has marked Selma’s clubs for Kesha Gibbons. She won’t be going back to the Tornado Club.
If you have information regarding either crime, call the Selma Police Department at 874-6611.
