If you have a sign on public property, the time to remove it is now.
Henry Hicks Sr., Selma’s code enforcement officer, has given sign owners 48 hours to remove their notices from telephone poles, trees, pipes or other structures on streets or sidewalks.
A city ordinance states that no signs can be placed on public property. Hicks said the announcement was about more than just political signs.
Hicks added that signs could be placed on private property with the owner’s permission.
If signs remain on public property after 48 hours have passed, Selma’s General Services employees will remove them. Signs will be taken to 1500 Broad Street, where they can be retrieved by the owner.
A $50 fine can be imposed on violators, but Hicks said no fine would be given at this time. However, he noted that if signs reappear after being removed a fine could be imposed, though it would be up to a municipal judge.
