The Selma Quarterback Club has announced its speaker agenda for the 2003 season. The schedule features some new speakers as well as some who haven’t spoken for the club in several years.

The season opens Aug. 10 with a visit from Vince Dooley, former University of Georgia head football coach and athletic director. Three weeks later, Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville will speak to the Quarterback Club on August 31.

Due to the early date of Dooley’s visit, the club will forego the preseason barbecue and kick off the regular club season with Dooley’s visit.

“We started working on this schedule a long time ago,” said Bill Porter, captain of the Quarterback Club.

Porter added that he was able to schedule Dooley because he took a football class under the Georgia coach in 1963.

The club will hold a meeting on Sept. 20, with Director of NFL Officials Ronnie Baynes speaking to the group. Former Auburn and Alabama head basketball coaches Sonny Smith and Wimp Sanderson will visit on Oct. 5. The two are now co-hosts of the Sonny & Wimp Sports Show.

Rick Comegy, head football coach and athletic director at Tuskeegee University, will pay the club a visit on Nov. 8. The club will visited by University of Alabama head football coach Mike Shula on Nov. 23. Porter said Shula’s visit was confirmed by Larry Striplin, head of the Alabama

Sports Hallf of Fame.

Former Mississippi State University football coach Jackie Sherrill will visit later in the season, as will sports talk show host, sports writer and author Paul Finebaum, and University of Alabama and Auburn men’s head basketball coaches Mark Gottfried and Jeff Lebo.

Dues this season will remain at $160. Those paying their dues before July 10 will receive a free guest pass.
