They have yet to beat Pepsi in two meetings this season, but this time could be different. At least Evans Chiropractor head coach Mike Rowe thinks so.

Rowe saw the charges on his 9-10-year-olds Dixie Youth Baseball League team punch their ticket to the second round of the American League playoffs with a decisive 13-2, four-inning victory over SouthTrust Bank, Saturday at the Sportsplex.

Evans Chiropractic used a balanced offense and some timely defense to advance in the playoffs. They will face a tough Pepsi team for the third time this season Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Pepsi earned its way to the second round by beating Lauderbacks Telephone Service, 8-7, in the early game Saturday.

“(Beating Pepsi) is going to be tough,” Rowe said after his team scored 11 runs in the final two innings to put the game away. “They’ve got a good, scrappy team, but we’re playing solid defense and we’re getting good hitting.”

The Evans Chiropractic offense systematically took apart SouthTrust Bank, keeping the opposing defense with an array of hits. Evans quickly got on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning. With two out, Michael Moore singled to left field. George Michael Rowe followed with a double to deep left-centerfield, scoring Moore. Rowe advanced to third on a fielding error and scored on a throwing error to put Evans ahead, 2-0.

That lead quickly grew in the second inning. Devonta Cleveland led off the frame with a bloop single to left field. One out later, Erick Blevins reached base on a fielding error that sent Cleveland to third. Demond Washington then reached on another fielding error that allowed Cleveland to score and make it a 3-0 Evans advantage.

Reahim Martin then singled to center, scoring Blevins. Joseph White Smith followed with a two-run triple over the head of the SouthTrust Bank centerfielder to make it 6-0. Martin scored on a triple by Jarious Moore, who also came home on another SouthTrust throwing miscue. Moore’s run stretched Evans’ lead to 8-0.

SouthTrust Bank got on the board in the top of the third when Justin Smith singled, went to third on a single by Arthur Murray and scored on a fielding error. Murray also scored on the second Evans miscue of the inning.

However, the defensive lapse did little to shake the Evans Chiropractic offense, which came up with five more runs in the third. The inning was highlighted by a two-run triple Washington. Henry Blevins and Erick Blevins also added RBI singles, while Martin drove in a run with an infield grounder.

In all, the bottom three batters in the Evans Chiropractic lineup drove in six of the team’s 13 runs.

“We try to spread out our offense,” Mike Rowe said. “The bottom of the order is tops for us.

I’ve got confidence in every part of our lineup.”
