A Wednesday arrest means a pair of illegal guns are off Selma’s streets.
Police arrested Michael Levell Prevo and charged him with Burglary third degree in connection with a theft of a “significant” amount of beer and cigarettes from Bob’s Grocery on Highway 22 West.
According to police officials a routine inventory of Prevo’s car turned up beer and cigarettes to match the amount taken from Bob’s.
Police officers also found a pair of illegally sawed-off shotguns.
“Possible federal charges under the Alabama ICE program are being considered regarding the sawed-off shotguns,” Selma Police Chief Robert Green said.
Apparently Selma officer Tim Barnhill noticed a white Ford Crown Victoria operating in a suspicious manner on Old Orrville Road near Landline Road.
“When the officer began to turn his vehicle around in order to investigate further, the vehicle turned onto Bracelle Drive and the occupants fled the scene before the officer was able to catch up,” Green said.
At the same time, other officers responded to an alarm activation at Bob’s Grocery.
The officers found a broken front window and searched the building.
They collected evidence and officers set up a perimeter to search for suspects.
“It was determined that significant quantities of beer and cigarettes were taken,” Green said.
Immediately after the alarm call was dispatched, officer Barnhill impounded the Crown Victoria that he had been investigating.
“During the routine inventory of the vehicle, the officer located beer and cigarettes consistent with the quantities missing from Bob’s Grocery,” Green said.
The officers also found the two illegally sawed-off shotguns.
Officer Ed Merrell recognized the car as Prevo’s. Apparently, the 21-year-old has had several run-ins with the law.
“He has a vast criminal record,” District Attorney Ed Greene said. “He is well-known to law enforcement.”
While searching the perimeter, officer Curtis Muhannad spotted a subject exiting from the woods.
The subject was sweating profusely.
Muhannad approached the subject and took him into custody without incident.
Prevo was booked and taken to the Dallas County Jail under a $5,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing and Det. David Hopkins is processing evidence and developing leads on additional suspects.
