The Selma All-Stars spotted Auburn a 2-0 lead, then exploded for 13 unanswered runs en route to a 13-2 win Friday in their opener of the 14-year-olds Dixie Boys All-Star Baseball Sub-State Tournament at Clanton.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday night at the Clanton City

Park. But thunderstorms and heavy rains postponed the game until Saturday morning.

Playing in sloppy conditions, Auburn proved little competition for a stronger Selma squad. The Selma All-Stars combined for three home runs, including two by Tervarious “T-Ray” Mitchell, in the victory.

Two games remained to be played Saturday before it could be determined who would face in the second round Sunday at 5 on Field D.

The winner of the Jackson-Demopolis game will advance to play the Dothan

National team. The winner of that game will advance to meet Selma. However, weather conditions in Clanton have thrown the tournament bracket schedule off-line. The tournament could be pushed back by a day if the torrential rains continue.

Should the tournament get back on track, Selma would play at 5 p.m. Sunday.

In Friday’s game, Clint Maroney surrendered two first-inning runs, but settled down to toss a complete game. Maroney gave up six hits, walked three and struck out eight to earn the victory.

Maroney also was given plenty of offensive support, as Selma took the lead for good with a three-run third inning, then added six runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth.

Mitchell supplied much of the punch for Selma with a pair of home runs, including a fourth-inning grand slam that slammed the door on Auburn.

Mitchell’s two-run home run capped a three-run third inning for Selma. Darious Steele contributed a run-scoring single in the inning.

In the fourth inning, Mitchell drilled his grand slam that extended the lead to 7-0. Jacoby Carter added a run-scoring double off the left-centerfield wall, then later scored to cap the frame.

Jeremy Phillips added Selma’s third home run of the game, a two-run blast that capped a four-run sixth inning that gave Selma the victory via the 10-run rule. Phillips also had a pair of singles.

James Bennett and Jacoby Carter each added three singles for Selma, while Justin Brown and Blake Robinson chipped in base hits as well.
