Bernice J. Clemons
Bernice J. Clemons, 69, of Selma, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at a local hospital.
Services were at 1 p.m. Monday, July 26, at Calvary M.B. Church with the Rev. C. A. Lett and the Rev. Marvin Lark officiating. Burial followed in Fairlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Erskine C. Clemons; parents, Hallie Hendrith-Smith and Rev. Noah Smith of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Gregg (Stacie) Clemons of Uniontown and Harold (Lula) Clemons of Sprott; three daughters, Bernadeia H. (Reginald) Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., Donna (Tim) Robinson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Gloria Clemons of Uniontown; two sisters, Maynette (Ivey) Harvey of Michigan and Jacqueline Drye of Nevada; 10 grandchildren; five nephews; two nieces; and other relatives.
A musical memorial and visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, at Calvary M.B. Church.
Mrs. Clemons was born in Selma, and baptized at First Baptist Church by the Rev. T.F. Grimmet. She attended elementary and high school at Selma University. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Knoxville College and her Master’s degree from the University of Alabama. She had also completed requirements for her Doctorate in education.
She taught in the Selma Public School System at Wallace Community College, at McRae-Gaines Learning Center ad most recently Central Christian Academy. She also taught for many years in the Minneapolis Public School System, while living in Minnesota.
She was a professional musician, mastering both the piano and organ, and was an excellent music teacher. She served as Minister of Music at New Morning Star Baptist Church in Demopolis.
Mrs. Clemons was active in the Alabama State Baptist Convention.
Matthew McNeal III
Services for Matthew McNeal III, 38, of Detroit, Mich., will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Mt. Nebo AME Zion Church in Marion. Burial will follow in Osburn Family Cemetery with Lee & Rollins Funeral Home directing.
Sandy Russell Sr.
Sandy Russell Sr., 92, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at a Perry County nursing home.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Green Leaf Baptist Church in Marion. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery in Marion with Lee & Rollins Funeral Home directing.
Corine Powell
Corine Powell, 88, of Selma, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at a local hospital.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at West Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. A. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include two sons, Professor Preston Powell Jr., (Ophelia) of Palm Bay Fla., and Clarence Anthony Powell; two daughters, Sarah Ann Powell (Charles) of Denver, Colo., and Estella Powell-Newton of Selma; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Professor Preston Powell Sr.
Clarence Mitchell
Clarence “Bud” Mitchell, 53, of Selma, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at a local hospital.
Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. F.D. Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include his wife, Rosetta J. Mitchell; mother, Minnie M. Underwood; one son, Calvin (Rosyln) Jones; one daughter, Sharon (Ronald) Spears; one sister, Kimberly Smiley; five grandchildren; five brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; two nephews; two aunts, Dorothy Shaw and Rosa McCoy; and a host of cousins and friends.
Bessie T. Brown
Bessie T. Brown, of Autaugaville, died Friday, July 23, 2004.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Miller Funeral Home.
