The Abbeville Christian Academy Generals faced a few obstacles in the season opener Friday night against the Meadowview Christian School Trojans.
For starters, the Generals made the jump to Class 2A after a four-year stint in Class A.
Secondly, it was the ACA debut of head coach Ronnie Shelley. Neither seemed to matter much as ACA rolled up 465 yards total offense in a 56-17 win over the Trojans at James W. Rane Sr. Stadium.
The story of the night was the Generals’ running game. ACA tallied 450 of its 465 yards on the ground and used eight ball carriers to do so.
ACA got the offense going about midway through the opening quarter when running back Dillon Johnson broke a scoreless affair with a 46-yard touchdown run.
Johnson took a pitch from Trey Michael and as defenders pursued, tossed the ball to Samuel Phillips for the two-point conversion.
On its next possession, ACA wasted little time finding the end zone. Johnson set up a score when he rumbled 31 yards to the 13-yard line.
Two plays later, Joseph Armstrong ran it in from four yards out. Cory Harpe ran in the 2-point conversion attempt to push the General lead to 16-0.
Meadowview Christian got on the board early in the second quarter. Tyler Wendell nailed a 30-yard field goal at the 11:03 mark to make it 16-3.
The Generals did not let the score reverse the momentum, though. ACA marched the ball downfield and the drive culminated when Jared McNeal lunged in from a yard out. McNeal carried three times for 19 yards on the drive. The toss pass worked again on the 2-point conversion try when Johnson flung the ball in Phillips’ direction.
Phillips made a diving stab to secure a 24-3 lead with 7:09 remaining in the half.
After Dillon Johnson forced and recovered a Trojans’ fumble, the Generals came back with another score.
Johnson received the pitch from Trey Michael and bounced outside, down the sideline and cut back to the middle of the field for a 56-yard score.
ACA added the 2-point conversion on the ground and built a 32-3 lead.
MCS’s scores came on a 5-yard run by Dustin Lee and a 1-yard run by Wayne Humphries late in the fourth quarter.
