Thirty-two minutes of aggressive basketball by the Marion Military Institute Tigers and cold shooting by the Central Christian Academy Warriors resulted in a 61-38 win for the Tigers on Thursday night at CCA.
“Aggressive play was one of the things we worked on in practice,” MMI coach Michelle Ivey said “We knew we had to match CCA’s aggressiveness and quickness to beat them on their home court.”
Both teams played intensive defense in the first quarter as the Tigers jumped to a 13-9 advantage to end the quarter.
MMI used the first 4:10 of the second quarter to put together a 13-4 run, that included three 3-pointers to go up by 13.
The Warriors turned it around with a 9-1 run of their own to get within five, 27-22. That was the closest CCA would come, as the Tigers stretched the lead back to double figures at halftime, 32-22.
Cold shooting was the Warriors’ nemesis in the third quarter. The Warriors went scoreless the first three minutes of the quarter.
Meanwhile, MMI ran off 11 straight points to make it 43-22. Clarence Algood poured in 10 points in the quarter as the Tigers took a 16-point lead into the final quarter.
CCA managed one field goal in the fourth quarter, as MMI continued to be tough on defense.
“This was probably the best game we played all year,” Ivey said.
The Tigers, now 11-0 on the year, produced a balanced attack led by Jovaris Smith with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Kendrick Moore added 17 points to go along with his 10 rebounds, while Clarence Algood contributed 16 points and David Conlan grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Warriors were led by Tee Woods with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Their record stands at 5-2.
