Center continues feeding hungry

Every year, during the end of December, more than 150 hungry people, many of them homeless, line up every day for a hot meal at the Edmundite Bosco Center.

“We serve anybody that comes,” Center Supervisor Mary Gayle said.

Gayle is one of the many workers that do their best every day to make sure needy people have something to eat.

“All through the year is busy,” she said, “but especially coming to the new year.”

Unfortunately, there’s only so much the Center can do.

The Center has no homeless shelter, and a lot of people need a place to stay, especially during the colder months.

Gayle said the problem can be tough to deal with, more so with native Selmians than others.

“Our homeless, if they don’t have anywhere to live, they’re not going to too much let you know,” she said.

Gayle said that a lot of area churches help out as much as possible.

“I’m sure that churches help a lot of people,” she said.

Most of the homeless in Selma are men, she said, who don’t have jobs.

“A lot of them don’t want to work, and a lot of them are not going to work, especially right here in Selma,” she said.

That doesn’t stop her from doing what she can.

The Bosco Center is always taking donations of everything that can be used.

We accept all types of donations: Food, clothing and money,” she said.
