‘Sloppy’ Selma survives Lions

As the clock wound down on the Selma High School Lady Saints’ 66-52 Saturday night win over the West End Lady Lions, a different story was told on the face of Selma coach Anthony Harris.

The Lady Saints won their third game of the week, but Harris shook his head after watching his team’s inconsistent play on offense.

“We played sloppy ball tonight,” Harris said after Selma collected just three offensive rebounds in the first half. “We played with absolutely no focus, no focus whatsoever.”

That appeared to be the case early on as Selma (13-3) was beaten to the ball by the more determined Lady Lions. Guard Sade Reed knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner to slice Selma’s lead to one, 21-20.

After a West End free throw, the Lady Lions grabbed a 23-21 lead when Andrea Evens garnered an offensive rebound, slid through the Selma defense and scored the lay-up with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

Moments later, Gabrielle Goudy attacked the left baseline to sink a running lay-up as the Lady Saints regained a 27-25 advantage. After a Leandre Frazier 16-footer tied the game, Amina Wofford’s pass from the foul line went to Goudy on the left wing. Goudy drilled a 12-foot jumper to give the Lady Saints took a 29-27 lead at the half.

The second half was quite different, as Selma opened with an 8-0 run and never looked back. The Lady Saints’ spurt was ignited by Ashley Green’s midcourt steal and lay-in that upped the Selma lead to 31-27.

Green and Santana Seay also dished out assists on the run, with Green’s going to Goudy while Seay found Erica Lumpkin on the right baseline for an easy lay-up. Green capped the run when she stole the Lady Lions’ inbound pass and and sent a bounce pass to Lumpkin, who drove around a West End defender for the short jumper and 37-27 lead.

The run, however, did little to satisfy Harris. The Lady Saints coach dispelled any thoughts that his team may be tired after competing in the River City Classic in Decatur two weeks ago.

“We played three tournaments last year,” he said. “We’ve only played in two tournaments this year. We’re not tired. We’re just not playing tough basketball. We’re not playing physical basketball.

“We won the game because we had more talent than they had,” added.

West End again rallied. Bridgett Barnfield’s jumper from the top of the key cut the Selma lead to 42-37 with just under three minutes remaining in the third.

Selma, however, answered with 7-1 run to close out the third period and stretch the margin back to 11.

The Lady Saints’ lead would slip under double-digits just once from there, but lay-ups by Goudy and Seay quickly pushed the Selma lead to 63-48.
