Saints lose to Carver

Two points in overtime usually would not be enough to help a team pull out a victory, but it was Friday night.

The Carver High School Wolverines, ranked seventh in Class 6A, scored just two points in the extra period Friday night, but they were enough to beat the Selma Saints, 49-47.

The Saints (11-7 overall, 6-3 in area) committed several turnovers in overtime after rallying to tie the game at the end of regulation.

“We’re giving the ball away. Turnovers, turnovers,” Selma coach Willie Maxey Jr. said. “If we limit the turnovers, we’ll win some more games.”

After cutting Carver’s lead to 26-20 at halftime, Selma took the lead on Cajun Pritchett’s 15-foot jumper. Carver answered with a lay-up to tie the game at 34.

Carver extended its lead to as much as 10 points, but the Saints again fought back. After being fouled behind the three-point line, John Dailey sank all three free throws. The Saints battled all the way back to tie the game when Edgar Brown hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 47 as regulation time expired.

Both teams went cold in the extra period, with Carver sinking the only basket to win the game.

Dailey finished with 17 points to lead the Saints.

Lady Senators beat Hooper, 45-29

“This was the best we’ve played all year,” Morgan Academy coach Robert Gartman said. “We really played well in the second half. Hopefully, this will give us momentum for the rest of the season.”

Morgan Academy led 11-9 after the first quarter and continued its slight two-point lead at halftime, 19-17.

But the Lady Senators began to pull away in the third period as they outscored Hooper Academy 12-7 in the third to move out to a 31-24 advantage.

Morgan Academy will host Monroe Academy on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.
