YMCA Camp Grist hosts summer camp
By Cassandra Mickens
The Selma-Times Journal
Seven to 12-years olds of Selma and Dallas County – slather on the bug repellent and sunscreen.
It’s time to go camping.
YMCA Camp Grist will host its summer residence camp Monday, July 17 through Saturday, July 22. The registration fee is $200 for YMCA members and $230 for non-members.
Reese Armstrong, who is one of 15 counselors at Camp Grist this year, said the young campers should anticipate a fun-filled experience. Armstrong expects 50 children will register for the camp, where they will spend six days and five nights with Mother Nature.
“(The campers) will be taking classes in the day and have activities like canoeing, archery, games, a ropes course and arts and crafts,” he said.
And when dusk falls the fun doesn’t end. Night activities include water wars, campfires, movie nights and dress up nights, where campers may emulate their favorite movie stars or patriotic heroes, Armstrong said.
Armstrong said campers should remember to carry all the basic camp necessities come Monday – sleeping bags, clothes, flashlights and water balloons to name a few.
