Aggression was the theme for Concordia’s first week of practice.
The Hornets’ 135 players are preparing for what will surely be another physically demanding season.
No time was wasted introducing the team’s incoming freshmen to Concordia’s style of play.
The week ended with a scrimmage between the freshmen and the returners Saturday.
Some of the new faces are holding their own and may be immediate impact players once the season gets underway.
Offensive guard Steven Welch from Wenonah High in Birmingham has looked impressive so far.
Defensively, linebacker Larry Harris and tackle Delorean Smith are pushing their way up the depth chart.
The veterans have also been impressive.
Concordia should have one of the most potent three-pronged offensive attacks in Division III with running back DeAngelo Surls, quarterback Ken Johnson and wide receiver John Halman.
Defensive end Corey Rue and Brandon Skanes anchor a defense that kept the Hornets in several ball games last season.
The difference between winning and losing close games could likely be the pounding the team takes in the weeks leading up to the season.
If not, the Hornets at least know they won’t have any excuse to back down during the eight road games they play this year.
