Less than two weeks ago, Selma’s Dixie Majors and Pre Majors teams were one loss from postseason elimination.
This weekend, they play to advance to state tournaments.
“We are very excited about our teams’ prospects,” said Tracy Williams, director of programs for Selma Parks and Recreation.
The Majors play in the sub-state tournament at Paterson Field in Montgomery Friday through Sunday. The tournament will follow a round-robin format. Selma plays at 1 p.m. Friday; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday; and 4 p.m., Sunday.
The winner advances to the state tournament in Tuscumbia for a three-game series with the north-state champion July 18-20.
The state champion advances to the Dixie World Series in Dyersburg, Tenn.
The Pre Majors play in the sub-state tournament July 11-13 in Ozark.
Like the Majors tournament, the Pre Majors tournament follows a round-robin format. Selma plays at 4 p.m., Friday; 1 p.m., Saturday; and 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Sunday.
Like the Majors, the Pre Majors’ winner advances to the state tournament in Tuscumbia for a three-game series with the north-state champion July 18-20.
The state champion advances to the Dixie World Series in Dyersburg.
“It’s something they’re going to remember the rest of their life,” said Elton Reese, director of Selma Parks and Recreation. “It’s a big deal and I love being a part of it.”
Unlike the Dixie Boys and Junior Boys, the Majors and Pre Majors teams do not have the luxury of a bye.
“With only one team going from each district, they do not have a bye situation,” said Williams. “Everyone plays.”
The Dixie Boys and Junior Boys earned one-seeds and byes by winning their district tournaments Tuesday night in Prattville.
“They will not have to play until Saturday at 5:30, which saves pitching for them,” said Williams.
With four teams participating in state tournaments over the next two weeks, Selma has four legitimate World Series contenders.
