Sonic shutters doors

Selma’s days of Route 44s, wacky packs and neon blue drinks seems to have taken a hiatus for the time being.
Sonic began dismantling Friday. Speakers to place food orders were taken down, windows of the building were boarded up and the sign is now gone. It looked like Sonic was preparing for a hurricane.
Calls to the Oklahoma home office were not returned Friday. Attempts also were futile to reach Mark Welch, the owner of Selma’s Sonic, who is based in Columbus, Miss.
The move caught many Selma residents off guard including business leaders.
“I didn’t know a thing about it,” Wayne Vardaman, executive director of the Selma-Dallas County Economic Development Authority. “I was just there last week. I can’t imagine them closing because they always have good business.”
People turning into the fast food drive-in left shocked instead of with food.
Most Selma residents are hoping the closing is temporary and that it is just for a remodel or new building.
Workers at the site, boarding up the windows and taking down the speakers, said they didn’t know anything about the restaurant.
At least one former employee, who asked not to be named, said she was unaware the fast-food restaurant had closed.
