Valley Grande ready for Fourth

With elections over and summer here, the city of Valley Grande is starting to gear up for its annual Fourth of July celebration at the Valley Grande Walking Trail.
“Other than Founder’s Day, the Fourth of July is our big celebration as a city,” said Valley Grande Mayor Tom Lee. “Each year it has grown, and we are expecting even more people to come this year.”
Councilwoman Donna Downs has been working on organizing the big event.
“I’m excited about what we have going this year,” said Downs. “You see a lot of people during the day.”
The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with a children’s bike parade at the walking trail.
“Children decorate their bikes, wagons, strollers, whatever,” said Downs. “The child who has the best decoration gets a prize. Last year’s winner dressed up like Uncle Sam.”
Downs said after the children’s parade and some fun and games, the fireworks show would begin at 9 p.m.
“Last year’s show was about 45 minutes long,” said Downs. “This year we hope for it to be that long, but we have gotten all new fireworks for the show.”
Along with the Fourth of July, there will be a barbecue contest held by the Exchange Club beginning at 3 p.m.
Downs said no alcohol would be allowed on city property during the festivities.
