Litter is a hometown problem

Areas of Selma will receive a much-needed and much-appreciated pick me up Saturday morning when an expected 100-plus volunteers will take part in a litter pick up campaign.

Areas in wards 3, 6, 7 and 8 will be the targets of these volunteers as it is these areas city leaders have identified as the areas most impacted by litter and displaced trash.

Volunteers from area schools and National Guard installations will converge on these parts of Selma to take part in this crucial program.

The question remains, will you be there? Will the elected leaders of these wards join in and will the residents of these wards join together to ensure the hard work that takes place Saturday morning is not wasted?

These are all crucial questions because volunteers from outside these wards can swoop in and take care of the problem in a day or two, but the core problem of litter and misplaced trash begins at home and is best solved by those who call these areas home.

We applaud the efforts of those who have organized these cleanups and sincerely thank the volunteers who will give up a part of their weekend to clean up a part of our city.

Let’s just hope their work is not ignored or even worse insulted by us not fixing the problem once and for all.
