Mrs. Thelma Green Mumford

Mrs. Thelma Green Mumford of Gasden, Alabama, has made her transition.

She was born in Marion, Alabama on September 21, 1937, to the late Eddie and Julia Green Jr.

On Thursday, September 30, 2010, she went home to live eternally with her Savior.

She confessed her faith in christ at an early age and joined Simpson Chapel United Methodist Church, Marion, AL.

During her early years, she was a member of the choir.

On December 17, 1959 she was united in marriage to the late Jessie Mumford, and moved to Gadsden, Alabama.

In the early 60’ they relocated to Jamaica, New York.

In 1972 they returned to Gadsden, Alabama, where she joined Bethlehem Baptist Church. She served as a Missionary in the Edna Johnson Circle, and was a choir member.

thelma was the oldest of eight children.

She was a gentle, quiet, and a loving spirit.

She weathered Green Hills slippery red-mud on every rainy day, by keeping her white

socks unblemished.

Thelma was the substitute mother to all of her siblings showing love and care to everyone she met.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1957, in Marion, Alabama.

She began to spend her summers in Gadsden, where she met her husband during her high school years.

While there she began working in healthcare at The Holy Name of Jesus Hospital, in Gadsden.

She remained in the healthcare field until she retired from Gadsden Healthcare and Rehab Center.

Her spirit of love remains with those whom she leaves to cherish her memory.

They include her devoted siblings, one brother, Leroy Green, Jamaica, New York; six sisters, Mary Jenkins, Julia (Charles) Cash, both of Marion, AL,Geneva Green, Cambria Heights, New York, Norma (Larry) Jhnson, Savannah, GA, Margare McClenney, Cynthia (William) Lapsley, both of Marion, AL.; one brother-in-law, Berkley (Betty) Mumford, Jamaica, New York; sister-in-law, WillieBell Mumford, Atlant, GA; seven aunts, Estella Robinson, Bessie Goldsby, Ardella Sanders, Ethel Woods, Lizzie Heard, and Martha Green, all of Marion, AL and Annie Bell Nemo, Chicago, Il; two uncles, Preston (Shirley) Green, Marion, AL and Willie (Katie) Green, Chicago, Il.

She was instrumental in the raising of Tamara (Paris) Kennie and Kelvin Green, both of Marion, AL.

Special nieces and nephews, Tashae, Kimani, Syretter, and Kwame.

Thelma was known as a surrogate-grandma to Justice Cash, the oldest  great nephew. Other great nieces  and nephews include, Daelin, Adasia, Paris, and Courtney. Ahost of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

A devoted friend, cousin, and travel companion, Willie Mae LaCount of Attalla, AL. Special friends Bernice Mitchell and Gladys Hoyt, both of Gasden, AL.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the Marion Baptist Academy, Marion, AL.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. until time of services.

Reverend Edward Pace of Gadsden, AL., officiating.
