Restoring a historic Selma building is clicks away.

For Weaver Castle Museum Inc., WCMI, to purchase and complete renovate Weaver Castle at 625 Lauderdale St., the organization needs $250,000.

What seems to be a large amount of money is attainable with thousands of online votes for the Pepsi Refresh Project contender “Create JOBS – SAVE Weaver Castle & help homeowners repair their homes.”

Pepsi Refresh Project is a monthly contest for ideas that “refresh” a community to compete for grant money.

“We really need everyone in Selma who has a computer to vote because it’s imperative that we do something with the building,” said Apaula Rae Roth, president and executive director for WCMI. “We don’t want to lose another historic building in Selma.”

Weaver Castle was built between 1865 and 1868 by William M. Weaver. The estate has been unoccupied since 2004, but WCMI would like to purchase the estate and renovate the building to use it as a bed and breakfast. It will also be available for weddings and receptions.

“There is a lot of work to be done,” Roth said. “That $250,000 will go a long way in accomplishing our total goal.”

Grant money will be divided as follows: $32,000 for electrical, $33,000 for plumbing in three bathrooms, $19,500 to repair ceilings and walls, $17,250 to repair and refinish flooring, $16,225 to install air conditioning and heating, $22,750 for the kitchen, $18,500 to paint and wallpapering, $97,00 to repair the staircase, $5,000 for landscaping, $2,500 for plans and permits, $3,575 for exterior cracks, $65,000 to purchase Weaver Castel, $2,000 to check and repair windows and $3,000 to check and repair the leaking roof.

The bed and breakfast will have two suites with private bathrooms and a sitting room.

Projects compete each month for grants in the amounts of up to 10 grants at the $5,000 level, 10 grants at the $25,000 level, 10 grants at the $50,000 level and 2 grants at the $250,000 level in categories of health, arts & culture, food & shelter, the planet, neighborhoods and education.

Top voting recipients in each category will be awarded the grant.

PepsiCo Inc. launched the grant contest in January for voting during February and grant distribution in March. The company plans to give away $20 million in grants during 2010.

All funding must be used within one year of acceptance and must be used in a U.S. based project.

Prior to sending the grant money, all finalist projects will undergo a verification process to check the credibility of the project by Global Giving, an online marketplace that connects communities with world-changing ideas.

Winners will also receive assistance from two other PepsiCo partners.

GOOD, a collaboration of non-profits, businesses, and people, is responsible for heading the grant process and assist in bringing grantees ideas to life.

Do Something, the largest non-profit teen charity, will provide award winners with ongoing support.

Voting closes Oct. 31. Finalists will be announced Nov. 1. To vote for “Create JOBS – SAVE Weaver Castle & help homeowners repair their homes,” visit www.refresheverything.com/weavercastle.
