Ghosts, ghouls, witches and werewolves made their way to the Cahaba Center for Mental Health for an annual Halloween party sponsored by the Selma Charity League.

The party, which Charity League president Sarah Youngblood said usually draws between 80 to 110 participants, featured a performance by magician Gary Ledbetter, a costume contest, music and refreshments.

The Halloween party, Youngblood said, is one of the League’s most entertaining events.

“This is definitely something we look forward to,” she said. “It’s so rewarding to see their faces. It makes what we’re doing so worthwhile.”

Members of the League usually spend about two months planning the event and making goodie bags, she said.

Awards were given out for cutest costume, scariest costume, and first, second, third and fourth place prizes for creativity.

Participants in the party came from allover the Black Belt. Many were from the center’s Selma locations, while others came from the Wilcox and Perry County branches.

Cahaba Center for Mental Health Coordinator of Day Programs Floyd Sanders said having the League provide the party each year means a lot.

“They have been doing it since I got here, which was 34 years ago, and it has always been great,” he said. “We appreciate their support.”

Sanders said the guests also voice their gratitude.

“It means so much to them to have something like this,” he said. “It means the world to them to be included and be able to do some of the things they normally wouldn’t be able to do.”
