Outsourcing garbage pickup?

A Selma City Council subcommittee on garbage will research some issues, but is expected to advocate outsourcing garbage collection soon.

Councilwoman Susan Keith, chair of the committee, said constituents all over the city are dissatisfied with their garbage collection.

“The last thing we discussed was a recommendation to outsource garbage collection,” Keith said during the Wednesday meeting.

While she seemed prepared to move forward, Councilwoman Bennie Ruth Crenshaw, a subcommittee member, said she’d like to see more research into the cost of outsourcing garbage collection and what would happen if a company came in and people refused to pay their monthly bills.

“When they don’t pay us; we still pick up,” Crenshaw said.

Last December the city council awarded a contract to Advanced Disposal, but withdrew the contract shortly after the owner said he would have to raise prices from $13.55 to $15 85 per household each month to make up for money he would lose because Browning Ferris Inc. has the contract for dumping large local garbage bins.
