Celebrating a day of thanks

Published 4:22 pm Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Today most of us pause to give thanks. It is one single day out of the year that we focus on our blessings, past and present.

In this day of Thanksgiving, let us think of all the miracles we see around us. We’re not talking about walking on water or floating in thin air or healing of the sick.

No, as teachers have told us before, the real miracle is to walk on solid ground. Every day that we draw a breath, we are engaged in a miracle.

Look at the blue sky, white clouds, and the colorful leaves on trees. Stare into the eyes of a child as he or she asks questions and suddenly that light of realization comes on.

On this day of Thanksgiving, focus on your mother and father, who gave you life; to your faith which gives you spiritual life and helps you know how to live each day; to friends who support you, especially when life becomes hard and then thank every living thing created for supporting life.

It is in this time of day that we should remember to be thankful for the miracle of life and to honor that miracle by being virtuous in speech and action, overcoming greed, anger and delusion.

It is best to remember the psalmist today when he said, “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
