Christmas charities need assistance

Every child deserves to have a merry Christmas.

Many of us have fond memories of Christmas morning with family and running to see what Santa left under the tree. They are memories that last a lifetime.

Unfortunately, there are lots of other children who experience the holidays on the opposite end of the spectrum. Running toward the Christmas tree to see that Santa has overlooked you for another year also stays with these children for the rest of their lives.

Fortunately in Selma there are a number of outlets that can help provide a merry Christmas to all.

One of the easiest ways to help underprivileged children in Selma and Dallas County is the Salvation Army and its Angel Tree.

This year, Salvation Army Major Tonya Roberts said the need has reached an all-time high with 900 names on the list.

In the past, she said the response from the community has been strong, but could be better.

If you prefer other outlets there are numerous civic organizations and churches that perform toy drives. These programs are not as widely publicized, but are equally effective in their goal. They generally target a smaller, more specific group of people, possibly even a single family, and provide a holiday to remember.

As we all know, these are not the best of times. Double-digit unemployment in the Black Belt has severely limited the amount some people are able to donate. On that same note, the list of people in need has increased.

This makes it even more important for those with the ability to give to step up.

Many of the drives ask only for a small toy and some warm clothing. No one is asking donors to bring in the latest video gaming system, a new bike or even the latest fashions.

These families simply need some warm clothes and smiles for their families.

As much as we see it in Christmas specials and Sunday school lessons, it is still easy to forget that it is truly better to give than to receive.

This year when you are looking over your list or picking up gifts for loved ones, pick up an extra gift to help out someone less fortunate.

Your purchase could mean a positive lifelong memory for a less fortunate child.
