Following Saturday’s meeting, Beloit Community Organization Inc. chief executive officer Edwin Braxter said things are moving along well. But, he added, there is still work to be done.

The meeting, which was held in the Selma Library conference room to discuss how to bring basic public services to Beloit, drew a larger crowd than expected.

“We were in that small conference room and it was full, so that was good,” he said. “I think everybody left happy and probably benefited from the meeting.”

Some of the problems the group has faced are who owns the legal rights to the old school building in Beloit.

Years ago, Braxter said the land and old school building was deeded to help the community. Now, he said, the group wants to find out who has the legal rights to get things started.

Some of the group’s goals are to bring a U.S. Post Office, Sheriff’s Department office, law firm, medical clinic, credit union, gas station and seafood market to the building or in the area.

The meeting, Braxter said, gave them more insight on how to make those things happen.

“We settled some of the problems that were in the minds of people,” he said. “I think we figured out that there had been a lot of blame being passed around, but we had ourselves to blame for not knowing what to do to move forward.”

One of the biggest problems, Braxter said, is where to go from here.

“We’ve got to figure out what to do and how we get there,” he said.

Additional meetings will be scheduled to continue to move the process forward, Braxter said. Currently, a second meeting is in the planning stages, but a date will likely not be announced until after the holidays.
