Saturday provides opportunities to make Selma better

Today, New Year resolutions are still in tact. The commitments we might have made to quit smoking, lose weight, eat healthier are holding strong and we’re focused on ensuring the new year is one we make the changes, the impact we’ve always wanted to make.

Saturday, we have a chance — on a much larger scale than as individuals — to have an impact on our hometown, our Selma, in volunteering with the citywide cleanup.

This event, which is held every so often throughout the year, is focused on removing litter from our streets, helping Selma put its best foot forward for those who may visit our city and showing we, as residents, take pride in the place we call home.

It is our hope Saturday’s event, which kicks off with a breakfast at the Larry D. Striplin Jr. Performing Arts Center at 8 a.m., attracts hundreds wanting to make their community a little better, a little cleaner.

Not only is this is a chance to help Selma, but it is a chance for some to simply show up or shut up. This is a chance for those individuals, those groups, who often speak of Selma’s ills to help cure one of them; litter.

We applaud Selma Mayor George Evans for continuing this effort and we look forward to see how many show up to help make a difference.

Saturday morning, for just a few hours, we have the opportunity to help Selma turn a corner, even if it is just by picking up a little trash.
