Project SHARE will help pay heating costs

Icy, cold temperatures make it hard to stay warm during the winter season, and as heating costs continue to rise, it may be harder for senior citizens with a low, fixed income or disabled individuals to stay warm.

The Black Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross offers a solution: residents can call a representative for a “phone only” appointment on Thursday, Jan. 13 beginning 8:30 a.m. to receive financial assistance for help in paying their utilities.

The Red Cross’ “Project SHARE” is a fund made possible through voluntary pledges to help low-income senior citizens or the disabled in Dallas County who need assistance paying for their energy bills.

Dallas County residents are encouraged to call 874-4641 and make an appointment with a Red Cross representative. Applications and interviews will be taken by “phone only” and walk-in appointments are not allowed.

According to a press release, funds are limited and will be disbursed at a first call basis. Qualified applicants will have their payments made directly to the energy suppliers.

Call 399-2010 for any questions on specific guidelines for assistance.

The Black Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross was unable to take applications Monday due to inclement weather.
