A fire Saturday afternoon caused extensive damage to a Selma Avenue home.

According to Selma Fire Chief Mike Stokes the department received the call for a fire at 414 Selma Ave. at 1:38 and was on the scene by 1:42 p.m.

“When we arrived the house was fully involved,” he said. “The fire appears to have started in the downstairs bedroom and spread to the outside wall and the attic area.”

No injuries were reported from the fire.

Stokes said three fire engines and the battalion chief responded to the call and had the scene cleared by 3:20 p.m.

Stokes said he believes the fire was accidental.

“We do not suspect arson caused the fire,” he said. “But we have still called in the state fire marshal on a separate issue.

Stokes said the fire left severe damage in the downstairs bedroom, outer wall and upstairs area.

A quick response was key in keeping the fire under control and clearing the scene in a timely manner, Stokes said.

Though the official report shows a response time of four minutes, Stokes said it was slightly less. Times, Stokes said, are rounded up, which means the department could have responded in just over three minutes.
