It’s time to unite for a safer Selma

There’s a saying one shouldn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Someone has already done that. We’ve already been there.

But, instead of adopting that logical mentality, the Selma City Council seems to be going in the opposite direction as they try to adopt an ordinance focusing on the BYOB (bring your own bottle) clubs in Selma.

Rather than focusing on the laws that are already on the books, the ones that focus on code enforcements, business licenses and the like; the council instead is looking at writing another.

Last Thursday, Mayor George Evans made the noble attempt of bringing together a few city and community leaders to provide updates on the city’s efforts to cut down on recent increases in violent crimes.

What should have been a one-sided discussion turned into a forum; a forum with little direction and little effectiveness.

It is our opinion, Evans, along with chief of police William T. Riley and Selma fire chief Mike Stokes, has the ability, the passion and the authority to act without further updates and further consultation.

We appreciate the updates, the discussion and the consultation with the council and other officials, but that takes time and, if we can adopt another cliché, too many cooks spoil the broth.

Today, we challenge community leaders and council members to do what they can to support the efforts of Mayor Evans, Riley and Stokes without question. Today is not the time for questions, but rather action. Today is the day, we stand united against gangs, drugs and those will ill intentions Today is the day we say we are for a better, safer Selma.
