Relief is on the way for Mabry Street residents and those who travel up and down the Old Town street. A large section of the street collapsed, leaving a massive hole in the street, forcing city work crews to scramble.

Selma Public Works Director Tommy Smith said he and others would meet with representatives of Wiregrass Construction and Goodwin, Mills and Cawood Wednesday to discuss which direction the repairs will head.

Until they receive more feedback, Smith said it is difficult to say when work can begin and be completed.

“We are going to talk to them more (Wednesday) to get a better idea of what is going on there,” he said. “Until they can pull it back it’s going to be hard for them to know exactly what they are going to have to do to fix it.”

Until the amount of damage can be surveyed, Smith said there is no way to exactly say when the road will be safe for travel.

“They aren’t going to be able to give us a time frame yet,” he said. “They’ll have to take a closer look before they can give us an estimate.”

The cost of the project will also depend on information gathered today.

For now, the street is blocked with cones and yellow tape. Until the work is completed motorists are asked to take alternate routes.

Along with the extent of the damage, weather will also be a factor in how quickly the street can be repaired.
