SPD makes arrest in Tuesday shooting

An unidentified Selma man died early Wednesday morning from injuries sustained in a Tuesday night shooting. This marks the third shooting death of 2011 in Selma.

Selma Police Department detective Lt. Mike Harris, said authorities have arrested Mark Anthony Cleveland in connection with the shooting that took place along the railroad tracks on North Lavender Street.

Both men are from Selma.

“We are still gathering information, but from what we can tell from the preliminary investigation the shooting is drug related,” Harris said.

The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family members, was transported to Baptist Hospital in Montgomery where he reportedly died around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Harris said authorities interviewed, arrested and charged Cleveland in connection with the shooting death.

Although the exact caliber of the firearm used has not been confirmed, Harris believes a handgun was the weapon used.

Cleveland was in Dallas County Jail without bond Wednesday evening, according to Selma chief of police William Riley.
