City and construction officials reported Wednesday that segments of the sidewalk in front of the new Selma Interpetive Center will be ready for Jubilee this weekend.

Selma Planning and Development director Charlotte Griffeth said a portion of the sidewalk project will be intact for visitors to walk from one area of the annual celebration to another.

“We talked to the organizers of Jubilee and I think everyone is happy with the way things are going to turn out,” she said. “They’ll still be able to set up on the block they normally use and a second block as well.”

The sidewalk area directly in front of the center on Water Avenue will be ready for the crowds and foot traffic, Griffeth said, along with a small portion beyond the building.

However, she did say the Riverfront Park area will be blocked off as crews continue work.

Though the park is not ready, Griffeth said she feels good about where it stands.

“We met with engineers recently and we also feel really good about the amphitheater and park,” she said.

National Voting Rights Museum executive director and one of the organizers of Jubilee Ollimatta Taal said she is excited about the sidewalk project opening to foot traffic.

“We feel like [Jubilee] is going to be one of the best ones yet,” she said. “We want to make sure the people can get from one area to the other and we feel good about that.”

The event, she said, is hoping to draw record numbers. Many festival goers, she said, will probably come from within the city limits.

“I feel like we are a close knit community and everybody knows everybody,” she said. “so we’re expecting everyone to have a good time.”
