We’ve all done it. We’ve all forgotten to set the clocks ahead or back — depending on the season — before we’ve gone to bed. And, what happens? We show up late to church or, we show up way too early.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, daylight savings time kicks in, giving us all a few extra hours of sunlight in the evening, proving some sunlight for little league baseball, fishing trips on the river and cookouts with friends.

But, this time of year also gives us an opportunity to take pause and check on a few items that could mean the difference between life and death.

Fire and insurance officials throughout the country urge residents to take time this weekend to make sure each of your home’s smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and other safety equipment is up to par.

Even though newer homes have smoke detectors and other sensors wired into the home’s electrical grid, fresh batteries provide an important backup when the power goes out.

Take the time to change batteries, restock emergency kits and check on fire extinguishers.

The extra time you take this weekend could very well mean the difference in your life or that of a loved one.

We may lose an hour of sleep this weekend, but it is important to not lose out on this chance to make your home — and your family — just a little safer.
