CAMDEN — Proceedings in the murder trial of Wendell Cheeseboro came to a close Wednesday in Wilcox County with a murder conviction.
The jury deliberated for about an hour before returning with the verdict.
Cheeseboro was found guilty of the Dec. 6, 2008 murder of Monticello Myles at Jerry Bradford’s Bar in Grille in Lower Peachtree.
District Attorney Michael Jackson said the conviction shows that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated in the Black Belt.
“This senseless murder snuffed out a young person’s life,” he said. “Wendell Cheeseboro will have a long time in prison to think about what he did.”
According to witnesses, the murder occurred when a fight broke out at the club where members of Wendell’s family were involved.
Neither Wendell nor Monticello were initially involved in the fight.
According to the report the night of the murder one of the witnesses, Fields Hicks, said he was dancing in the club when Cheeseboro hit him with a beer bottle and they fell to the floor. Myles stepped in to pull Hicks out of the fight.
Later that night Myles was killed by a shotgun blast.
Cheeseboro’s bond was revoked and he was ordered to the Wilcox County Jail by Circuit Judge Tommy Jones. He will be sentenced in a few months after a pre-sentence investigation and report is completed.
He is facing 20 years to life in prison.
